What GhostSurf Does by Default

Update Hubs

To route your information through the global network of anonymous hubs, you first need to have access to this network. For this you need to know which hubs are available, and for an efficient connection you need to know which are fast and which are not. By default, GhostSurf installs a task in the Scheduler which will download a complete list of anonymous hubs, test the hubs for speed, and then choose the 8 best hubs for you. This task will run when you first start GhostSurf, and every day after that (to keep your hubs list fresh). You can, of course, modify or delete this task by going into the Scheduler.

If you see your network connection become active when you first start GhostSurf, even though you're not surfing the web, don't be alarmed; GhostSurf is downloading a list of anonymous hubs from the Internet, and testing the results. No information is sent out.

Privacy

By default, GhostSurf blocks your personal information from leaving your computer and it blocks popups on web pages. Both these settings appear in the Privacy Control Center, under "New websites." You can change them by opening the Privacy Control Center and deselecting the appropriate buttons.

In particular, some websites (like Hotmail) require personal information, and others (like Windows Update) require popups. Although GhostSurf is smart enough not to block personal information and popups on these two sites, there may be others that have related problems. To selectively allow personal information to reach a site, or popups to appear on a site, right-click it in the Privacy Control Center and choose "Allow everything" from the menu that appears.

Ad blocking

GhostSurf blocks some known advertiser sites immediately upon installation, to demonstrate the benefit you will get from using GhostSurf (both in terms of speed in loading pages, and in terms of blocking privacy abuses from websites you didn't choose to visit). These sites are listed in the file knownadsites.txt in the GhostSurf directory. You can block additional sites using the Privacy Control Center or QuickBlock; you can also use the Privacy Control Center to unblock the ones that are blocked by default.
